Mr. Peepers We Will Miss You!
No matter how briefly a soul touches yours
No Matter how small that soul may be
It is the greatest gift from the Goddess
Rejoice in that small and brief touch
Even through our tears.
Just a few short weeks ago we found a baby pigeon in our back yard. He had fallen out of the nest which was on our roof. There was no way to put him back in the nest, so we knew we had to try to take care of him. The only place we knew of that usually takes in baby birds like this told us that the were not taking in animals right now. They had a fire at their faciility several months ago, so they are still recovering from that.
Steve and I decided we’d do whatever it took to take care of this little one. We bought baby bird formula, took it to the vet, and fed it several times a day. Everything seemed to be going so well. He was getting bigger and eating more. Every day more of his feathers were coming out and he was really starting to look like a Pigeon! Mr. Peepers fell into our hearts as quickly as he fell into our backyard…. and he left us just as quickly.
Yesterday we knew something was wrong. After his morning feeding he just wasn’t acting the way he normally did. Usually he’s very active and tries to find the food from our hands. He’s very cute and vocal… but yesterday he hardly chirped at all, and wasn’t very active. We took him to the vet and we were told that he probably had a parasite that was causing him to feel badly. They gave us some medicine and sent us home.
He still wasn’t acting himself. He wasn’t interested in food, but we were told to feed him anyway. We started giving him his evening feeding… and that’s when he left us. It was very quick and we couldn’t do anything but watch and cry.
Today, Steve and I took him up to the mountains to bury him in the forest. He is with the Great Mother now, flying with the angels. We are all very sad now, because we cared for this little soul so much. But it truly was a wondrous gift to have this little soul touch our lives and our hearts so deeply. I know that when the pain subsides we’ll have these memories of a cute little bird that we came to love so much in such a short time.
