Recently I had the oppotunity to preview 3 different CBS shows, two of which are brand spanking new. Accidentally On Purpose is the first one that I watched. I was pretty excited about it because Jenna Elfman is the star of the show, and I’ve loved her since Dahrma and Greg. She has such a smart and perky personality that she’s a joy to watch in any film or tv show. I have to say though, I was skeptical about this new sitcom, even with Jenna Elfman in it, because in the last few years there hasn’t been a single sitcom that I’ve liked. I know there are some popular ones out there, but I’m not a fan of a single one. Except maybe The Simpsons, and they started in the early 90’s so they aren’t new! However, this show, Accidentally On Purpose, will be the exception in my lack of comedy favorites! Becuase I LOVED IT!!!!!
About the Show
(from CBS)
ACCIDENTALLY ON PURPOSE is a comedy starring Golden Globe Award winner Jenna Elfman as Billie, a single woman who finds herself “accidentally” pregnant after a one-night stand with a much younger guy, and decides to keep the baby… and the guy. A newspaper film critic, Billie is barely surviving a humiliating breakup with her charming boss, James (Grant Show), who’s still trying to resume their relationship. Suddenly expecting a child with her “boy toy,” Zack (Jon Foster), Billie and Zack make an arrangement: to live together platonically. Billie’s party girl best friend Olivia (Ashley Jensen), and Abby (Lennon Parham), her conventional, younger married sister, eagerly look forward to the new addition and offer their own brands of advice and encouragement. But when Zack and his freeloading friends, including Davis (Nicolas Wright), start to turn her place into a frat house, Billie isn’t sure if she’s living with a boyfriend, a roommate, or if she just has another child to raise. Lloyd Braun, Gail Berman, Gene Stein and Claudia Lonow are the executive producers for CBS Television Studios. Pamela Fryman directed the pilot.
This is just a small example of how cute and funny this show is! This show may become near and dear to my heart for two reasons. One, I’m a single mom, and two, I’m in my late 30’s. I may not have become a single mom in the same way, but I’m certainly going through a lot of the same things. Trying to figure out how to be a mom in today’s society, unmarried, supporting my family myself. I was a little concerned at first at how they were going to deal with the whole “single mom” thing. We haven’t been getting the best of press lately! Then I realized that this is based on a real person and her real life! “Accidentally On Purpose: A True Tale of a Happy Single Mom” by Mary Pols is about a real life single mom (Look for my review of the book at my blog Books4Moms). The sitcom is based on the book and her life. This made it even more important to me that it be a good show! I wasn’t disappointed. It’s really great.

Jenna Elfman stars as Billie in the new comedy series ACCIDENTALLY ON PURPOSE on the CBS Television Network. You’ll remember her from Dahrma and Greg, where she played a quirky, new age, hippie child married to a rich brat, straight laced lawyer. I loved her in Dahrma and Greg, and I love her in Accidentally On Purpose! She’s not afraid to be silly and crazy and makes me feel like she’s “just like me”. After watching the pilot, I can’t wait to see the rest of the episodes!

The cast are all cute and funny and the chemistry of the ensemble reminds me of “Friends” during it’s hay days. I was in my twenty’s during “Friends” and felt like it spoke to my life and situation. I even have a relationship very similar to Ross and Rachel (on again off again on again). So when they went off the air, I felt a little forsaken, left out. Most of the sitcoms now are about twenty-somethings. I’m not twenty anymore. Accidentally On Purpose is about a 30 something single mom… that’s ME! I can definitely relate to this show and the characters. This will definitely be a show that I set up to record the entire series on my Media Center (does anyone watch things with commercials anymore? LOL!).
I definitely recommend this fantastic and funny sitcom to anyone, but most especially to the 30-something single moms out there!
